Simina Grigoriu’s record label, Kuukou, presents a hypnotic techno EP by Boom Merchant that has raw sounds and warping euphoria.
Boom Merchant is an Irish artist living in Mexico, and he makes his Kuukou debut following music on other respected imprints ranging from T78’s Autektone to his own Tribal Pulse. The tracks are in his unique style, which combines swirling percussion and mesmerising melody.
The title track, “Peer Pressure” opens the release. It’s a rugged techno track with grinding stabs and throbbing bass underpinning a euphoric arpeggio line, while boisterous vocals add to the unfolding intensity.
Next up, “Arco” is the deeper of the two tracks, with flurries of melody and a looped vocal texture merging to create a dark groove. Powered by high-velocity drum patterns, its defining feature is a haunting vocal that provides heartfelt contrast with the dystopian vibe of the driving backing track.
