Hello Maglia, great to have you with us today! Whereabouts are you based right now?
Hello Techno Mood ! I am based in Mykonos, in the Greek islands at the moment.
How is the music scene doing there following the pandemic?
The club and party scene here is expecting a crazy summer ! A lot of excitement on what is looking to be the first “normal” summer after 2 years.
We’re pleased to be chatting with you around the release of your debut EP on Rebellion, with the four track Chouia EP, congrats on this one! What’s the story behind this EP?
These are tracks I have been finishing during the pandemic months of the winter 2020/21. I had set up a studio here in Mykonos and isolated myself to focus on music. These 4 tracks are from the first “batch” of that time.
The EP features Middle Eastern sonorities throughout, what’s special about these sounds to you?
I’ve always been drawn to these sonorities. I’m lucky to have friends from different parts of the Middle East and North Africa and my travels in these countries make me experience this sound up close. I found a very powerful energy, almost mystical coming from this sound.
We’d love to hear about how you first began following your musical path. What was it that first inspired you to do so?
Was actually dancing. I come from a family of dancers and started dancing at an early age. This and the hip hop culture in general was my first inspiration.
Who or what styles of music had the biggest influence on you during your early years in music?
Definitely Hip Hop. As mentioned above the breakdance, sound systems, and Hip hop culture in general was my first influence
What can you tell us about the Moni establishment?
It’s a joint venture we started as friends in 2013 very spontaneously. A Greek friend of mine from London has been talking to me about Mykonos for years, we came across an opportunity and just went for it. We wanted a place for ourselves to do as we please on the sound, music policy etc. To party with our friends. We didn’t anticipate the explosion of Mykonos the following years, so it turned out to be a great move !:)
How does the Moni studio operate?
At the start of the pandemic we decided to turn the club into a music studio and offer a place of creativity to anybody who wanted to escape the city life and make music with us.. We had the visit of many great artists such as Gilb’R from Versatile, Aera, Toto Chiavetta, DJ Gregory and more. We then decided to launch a label called ANEMOS DANCE to put out all these collaborations. My friend Hardt Antoine and myself are running the imprint now with a lot of exciting releases to come !
What piece of advice would you offer to an aspiring artist?
To do the work, acquire all the technical skills possible to express yourself and to find your identity. I am still working on it and it has been more than 10 years since the first time I sat behind DAW… There’s no shortcut.
Thank you for chatting with us today Maglia! To round off, is there anything else on the way from yourself that you’d like to share with us?
To listen to the CHOUIA EP on Rebellion as well as the Spirit V on Crosstown Rebel coming out in June with another track of mine following the same inspiration of Chouia…
Oh and our Cycladic based imprint ANEMOS DANCE with a lot of Gems coming out this summer !
