Byzantine Time Machine, a musical venture born from the collaborative spirit of Eve and George Lawler, has become a dynamic force in Chicago’s eclectic music scene. Since its inception in 2013, the duo has embarked on a musical journey that transcends borders and centuries, weaving together the rich tapestry of sounds from Greece, Turkey, the Balkans, and the Middle East. Their latest release, the EP titled “Reflections of Lyra,” marks another milestone in their exploration of merging ancient musical traditions with contemporary electronic sounds, particularly within the realm of house music.
George Lawler, with his roots deeply embedded in the underground dance music scene of Chicago, has a history of playing live house music, drum and bass, and hip-hop in various bands. This diverse background laid the foundation for Byzantine Time Machine’s unique sound, fusing the traditional elements of folk music with the pulsating beats of electronic genres. Eve and George, both having immersed themselves in the exploration of Byzantine and Middle Eastern music, have carved a niche for themselves in the fusion of old and new.
The duo’s involvement with “The Newberry Consort,” an early music ensemble in Chicago, and their collaboration with Tunisian master percussionist Najib Bhari demonstrate their commitment to embracing a wide array of musical influences. For a decade, they also took on the role of music directors for the Orpheus Hellenic Folklore Society, immersing themselves in the world of Greek folk music.
“Reflections of Lyra” serves as a testament to their dedication to blending ancient and contemporary sounds. The EP takes its name from the Lyra, an ancient musical instrument played by the mythical Orpheus and immortalized in the night sky as a constellation of stars. The choice of title not only reflects the thematic essence of the music but also pays homage to Lyra restaurant in Chicago’s Fulton Market district, where the duo frequently performs alongside a DJ spinning a variety of Mediterranean house music.
Intriguingly, Byzantine Time Machine’s connection with Cafe De Anatolia adds an exciting dimension to their musical journey. As they curated tracks for their live performances, the duo discovered a wealth of exceptional tunes from the Cafe De Anatolia label. This revelation sparked a desire that has now come to fruition with the release of their EP. The collaboration with Cafe De Anatolia is a testament to the universal appeal of their music, bridging cultural gaps and bringing together diverse musical traditions.
“Reflections of Lyra” is not just an EP; it’s a musical odyssey that invites listeners to traverse the boundaries of time and space. Byzantine Time Machine continues to be a captivating force, seamlessly blending ancient melodies with modern beats, creating a sonic experience that transcends cultural and temporal divides.
