Georgia Lee

Georgia Lee is a skilled DJ who is well known in Italy for her sets on the same line-up as people like Ellen Allien and Regis. She is also a talented producer who recently dropped a dark and driving new single “Out of the Dark” via Sisko Electrofanatik’s record label Gain Records. The release also includes remixes by Alex Nocera, Produkkt, and D Lewis. We caught up with Georgia Lee to find out more about her new release and other projects…

Hi Georgia Lee, it’s great to be talking with you today, can you start by running us through your background in music?
I started at 14 years old as a jazz singer, and I joined the electronic / new wave project called -ELETTRONOIR- as lead vocal and synth player for 12 years. Shortly after, I started my DJ career with new wave / ‘80s and post punk selections and reached, at one point, a techno and electronic attitude, which is my main style.

Tell us about where you live, and how the local scene has influenced your sound?
I have been influenced by my experiences and my dark background, but I cannot say I have been influenced by any artist in particular in my life.

At what point in your life did you decide to become a DJ and start producing music?
I have never been one for clubbing, but after several years with my band -ELETTRONOIR- I decided to try to do little DJ sets of post punk / wave-oriented music including our own tracks, to share our music as much as possible. Then I started to mix electro with ‘80s sounds and so far, going with the flow, I naturally started to empower myself into electronic music and techno… 25 years ago!

Talk us through your new release “Out of the Dark,” and what inspired the original track?
Out of the Dark is an introspective work based on the fusion of cosmic and dark techno sounds that slowly evolves until it reaches its inevitable sonic and empathetic resolution. The original track has a booming kick drum and throbbing bassline laying a foundation for crunching hi-hats and tension building pads. Its spiralling synths and deep atmosphere add to the tidal wave of momentum created by this smouldering slice of techno. I come from new wave and dark wave, early ‘80s, rock and cold wave sound, so this is why the atmosphere in my works is always deep and with a retro taste of restless. The title of “Out of the Dark” is a clear tribute to the song of Falco (Out of the Dark), so melancholic mood is pretty popular in my releases 😊.

Your new release also features remixes by Alex Nocera, Produkkt and D Lewis. What do you think of their versions, and did you have any involvement in selecting the remix artists?
I have chosen them because they are completely different from each other and they have provided a personal vision and reinterpretation of my original track representing a progression from the dark to the light.

All of the remix artists on this release are from Italy. First up, Alex Nocera is known for his tantalising techno tracks on record labels ranging from Frankyeffe’s Riot Recordings to Spartaque’s IAMT Red. Produkkt is an eclectic artist who drops the tempo to deliver an indie dance remix. D Lewis is a veteran artist whose career spans back to the ’90s. He was one half of D Lewis & Emix, and has featured on over 50 vinyl releases, including labels such as Acid 80 and Antibemusic. D Lewis has previously featured techno tracks on Gain, and his electro-tinged remix has an Italo disco vibe.

What other record labels have you worked with, and what’s coming up in your release schedule?
I have always released my albums and my music by myself because I strongly support the autonomous production process, which is synonymous with independence and freedom. Last year I met Sisko, the owner of Gain Records, and I decided to join his label firstly because of his vision of music, and also because I really love his sound… so here we are with my second release with him!

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today, is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
I just want to say thanks to all the artists who supported me during the creative process of this work: Sisko and my label manager, Produkkt, Aex Nocera, D Lewis for their remixes, Lory for her vocal on the track, Federico Ciacci for his amazing artwork, Stefano Corso and Angela Rago who help me to realise all the pictures, La Roboterie for helping me to share my music across Italy for years, and all of the people who believe in me and in my music.
