K LSY are an Italian duo from Pesaro who are known for their invigorating style of upbeat house and techno. They are skilled DJs who play regularly in their home region, and they also produce party starting tracks. Their music generally focuses on house music, but their new, Les Crepes EP on Mantide has a techno influence. We caught up with K LSY to find out more about them and their new release…
Hi K LSY, it’s great to be talking with you today, can you start by running us through your background in music?
Hi! We’ve been friends since primary school and we’ve always listened to music together since we were kids. In secondary school, we started making music together too. At first, we were part of a band playing British indie rock, then we began experimenting with synthesisers. From there we started refining and shaping our sound, taking inspiration from what the greats were doing, watching the dance floor while we played, and constantly discovering new music along the way.
Tell us about where you live, and how the local scene has influenced your own music?
We live on Italy’s Adriatic coast, in one of the areas with the highest concentration of clubs. Just a few kilometres from us there are legendary venues like Cocoricò and Space Club. Over the past year, a major music festival called the Adriatic Sound Festival has also popped up right here in our city. So yeah, we’re basically surrounded by the scene we belong to, and over the years that’s given us plenty of chances to collaborate with internationally renowned artists.
At what point in your life did you decide to become a DJ and start producing music?
For us, the journey actually went the other way around: we started by producing music first, and only later began playing live sets and DJing, as a way to promote it. We started producing electronic music in 2018, experimenting with very different genres. Before that we played guitar, piano and bass, and Piero sang. So, our move into electronic music really came from a desire to experiment with something new.
Later on, we started putting together our first live sets, and that’s when the real spark happened. It quickly became a huge passion, and we began focusing more and more on creating the feeling of a journey during our performances. This exploration was both musical and visual, thanks to LED lighting systems that follow us around during our concerts.
Talk us through your new release ‘Les Crepes’, and what inspired the tracks?
The two tracks on this new release came out of a great experience at the JagerMusic Lab in Rimini, which gave us the chance to collaborate with lots of different artists and discover new sounds. “Les Crepes” is a purely electronic track, built using our analogue synths in the studio. In a way it’s quite hypnotic, but at the same time it’s full of energy. The whole thing is wrapped in a sensual atmosphere created by the vocals of our friend and great performer Moody Jane. The vocal is actually the recipe for making crepes, and it takes some serious skill to interpret and sing the words how she did.
“Step On,” on the other hand, leans more toward peak-time energy. It’s a very high-energy track, which has been made for the dance floor. We went in that direction inspired by a DJ set from Ritchie Hawtin. The vocals, meanwhile, were created through meticulous editing of a track from the 1970s.
Les Crepes is out on the Mantide record label, could you tell us about your relationship with the imprint, and how you first made contact with them?
Mantide is a label we feel particularly close to, both literally and figuratively. In fact, Dyno who owns the label lives right behind one of our houses. What really connects us is a strong friendship that started back in 2021, when we were basically running a club from home, and Dyno came over to warn us that the neighbours were getting pretty angry about the noise that summer. He gave us a heads-up, and helped us adjust our approach so we could keep things cool with everyone around us. Only later did he find out that we were producing our own music. From there, we started working together.
What other record labels have you worked with, and what’s coming up in your release schedule?
We’ve also worked with Sonoros (Sirup Music Group), Fankee and Bonnot Music. We’re grateful to all of them, because each one has helped us grow in their own way.
The challenge for the future is to keep a steady flow of releases, while maintaining a high level of quality, and to keep developing and refining our sound even further. That will come after the summer, because the summer is for playing music.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us today, is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
Thank you for your time! And if you like what we do, then keep up with us on our Instagram page @k.lsy_ and give us a follow-on Spotify too. We’ve only just gotten started J
