Hailed by critics as “one of techno’s most sought-after acts of the decade” Space 92’s rise to superstardom has been meteoric to say the least. One of the best selling Techno artists in the world for the past three years, the prolific, in-demand Frenchman has achieved more in the space of a few years than most could hope to achieve in a whole career. Fresh off the back of his collaboration ‘Control’ with POPOF and UMEK, we sat down with the man himself to find out more.
Hi Mathieu and welcome to Techno Mood. So great to have you with us!
Hi there, thanks for having me today. Pleasure is mine!
How has this year been for you so far?
I can’t complain at the moment, it’s been really good so far. I have been able to visit many countries and share my music with a lot of people. I had supporters waiting for me to come to a bunch of European cities, and even places like Sydney or Melbourne in Australia. In terms of releases, I’ve also got a lot of things in the pipeline for this year.
Can you tell us about the electronic music scene where you’re living right now?
In France, the electronic scene has gained an amazing popularity since the Covid pandemic. Once the restrictions were lifted there were a lot of sold-out events and festivals. I mean, I completely felt the same because once the Covid lockdown was over I was also dying to go out and enjoy my new-found freedom.
What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not touring the world or making music?
I do a lot of sports outside of music, especially running but also boxing. This helps me to clear my mind and be more productive when I come back to work, and also allows me to discover new landscapes. I live not far from the Pyrenees mountain range in the south of France near Toulouse; it’s beautiful and a perfect place to recharge my batteries.
Tell us about your recent collaboration with POPOF and UMEK.
Setting up this collaboration was a real pleasure because I get along very well with Umek and Popof. Our current musical contexts & directions fit perfectly each other and this collaboration was able to successfully find a balance reflecting our three artistic production identities.
Do you have any more releases planned in the coming months that you can tell us about?
I have a lot of new music coming out. I’m about to release a new EP on a well-known American label and I’m also preparing a new release on Filth On Acid, which will feature a brand-new collaboration with HI-LO. A lot of other projects are planned by the end of the year.
What are your favourite pieces of studio equipment right now? (Please name at least three)
Ableton Push 2, Serum, Moog Sub 37
Can you tell us about some of your favourite non-electronic music artists?
I currently listen a lot to the pop-rock band The War on Drugs. I also dig stuff like The Weeknd, Phil Collins, Nirvana …
What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
My plans involve releasing a bunch of new music, performing a lot in order to share my music with as many people as possible, and launching my own label. Not a very busy schedule, isn’t it : )
On the live side, where can we next see you perform?
In so many countries and places… Very soon I’ll be in Germany, in Berlin and in other cities like Stuttgart. I’ll also head to Latin America and perform in Santiago (Chile). I’m also due to play at Balaton festival (Budapest) in Hungary. Stay tuned, I regularly post new dates on my social media.
Any final words for our Techno Mood readers?
Thank you so much for your continued support!
